Award Criteria

Nomination Procedure:

Nominator will fill out the Nomination Form. Once the Nomination Form is complete, an email will be sent to the nominee for further information, Curriculum Vitae, and examples of work.

All Awards:

  • Nomination has been made by a greater Edmonton resident (either individual or organization).
  • Nominee has not been nominated by family members, or themselves.
  • Nominee’s current CV/resume clearly outlines body of work, relevant experience, exhibitions, shows and community service work where appropriate.
  • Support materials are provided and showcase the nominee appropriately.

 

Courage to Innovate Award

Recognizing an individual or organization that has displayed the courage to take artistic risks and embrace innovation in artistic expression, resulting in a unique and distinctive project.

  • The nominee is an individual or group displaying the courage to adopt a creative approach, seek continuous improvement or implement new ideas in support of artistic expression.
  • The nominee has initiated creative ideas or solutions in their artistic expression or administrative practices.
  • The nominee has taken considered risks or driven progress to change, expand or support the artistic experience.
  • The nominee has displayed creativity in challenging the status quo in artistic expression, reaching audience, or supporting management practices.

Award for Excellence in Artistic Leadership

Recognizing the outstanding achievement of an artistic leader in an arts discipline, actively leading and working in the greater Edmonton arts and culture sector.

  • Nominee has demonstrated outstanding achievement as an artistic leader in an arts discipline.
  • Nominee is not at the end of their career, but is actively leading and working in the arts.
  • Nominee has demonstrated strong artistic vision.
  • Nominee leads others towards excellence in the performing, visual or literary arts.

Award for Excellence in Arts Management

Recognizing individuals or organizations who have demonstrated innovation, leadership and vision in the management of a professional arts organization.

  • Nominee demonstrates commitment to arts management in Edmonton region.
  • Individual/organization has demonstrated innovation and vision in management of a professional arts organization.
  • Nominee shows leadership in their organization and the Edmonton arts sector

Award for an Emerging Artist

Recognizing Edmonton’s valued, upcoming professionals- artists (regardless of age) who, in the early stages of their careers, demonstrate exceptional talent and accomplishments, as well as a unique artistic expression and commitment to the arts in the Edmonton region

  • Nominee has specialized training in their field (not necessarily academic), has produced an independent body of work, and has shown sustained commitment to development of artistic skills.
  • Nominee has increasing activity in the Edmonton arts community.
  • The nominee is committed to their practice as a long term career, and seeks income through their artistic work.  

Award for Outstanding Lifetime Achievement

Recognizing an individual who, over a minimum of 25 years, has made an outstanding contribution to the arts in Edmonton.

  • Nominee is an individual artist who has made outstanding contributions to arts in Edmonton over extended period of time.
  • Contribution primarily through chosen artistic discipline; also recognized for outstanding work in support of arts generally in Edmonton region.
  • Artistic output should extend for at least 25 years.

Ambassador of the Arts Award

Recognizing a mid-career individual or organization successful on a national or international level, that enlightens audiences and promotes Edmonton’s rich cultural, performance or visual arts scene in an extraordinary way.

  • The nominee is an established, mid-career artist or organization.
  • The nominee has been recognized for their art on the national or international level.
  • The nominee has informed audiences about Edmonton’s arts and culture scene.
  • The nominee has promoted Edmonton, and specifically Edmonton arts, abroad.

Mayor’s Award for Sustained Support of the Arts

Recognizing a business or an individual that has demonstrated an ongoing commitment to investing in Edmonton’s arts and culture industry through a specific arts organization, event, individual artist, or widespread investment in the arts.

  • Nominee demonstrates commitment to supporting the arts in Edmonton region.
  • Nominee’s activities match the following criteria:
    • This business or individual has shown an ongoing commitment to investing in arts and culture in the greater Edmonton area.
    • The nominee’s investment in arts and culture has shown a long-term benefit.
    • Examples are given of arts organizations, events, arts and culture programs and/or artists in which this nominee has invested.
  • The nominee’s investment is considered to be ongoing, long-term and committed.

Mayor’s Award for Innovative Support by a Business for the Arts

Recognizing a local business that has invested in an arts organization, event, project or individual artist in the greater Edmonton area in a creative and original manner.

  • Nominee demonstrates commitment to supporting the arts in Edmonton region.
  • Nominee’s activities match the following criteria:
    • This business has invested in arts and culture in the greater Edmonton area.
    • This business’s investment in arts and culture has benefitted the greater Edmonton area.
    • The nominee is being nominated for a specific arts organization, event, project or artist that the nominee has supported.
    • The form of investment, in the instance of this nomination, is considered to be creative or original.

John Poole Award for Promotion of the Arts

Recognizing an individual, arts organization, media organization or business that has promoted the arts in a distinctly creative or exceptional manner.

  • Nominee demonstrates commitment to supporting the arts in Edmonton region.
  • Nominee’s activities match the following criteria:
    • The individual, organization, media organization or business promoted arts and culture in the greater Edmonton area.
    • Examples are given of arts organizations, events, arts and culture programs and/or artists this nominee has promoted
    • This promotion is considered to be distinctly creative or exceptional
